Your stressing me out!

🚦 Give Learners Space: Back Off! 🚗
We’ve all been there: running a bit late, stuck behind a car that’s moving slowly or stalling… and that car has L-plates. 😬
It can be frustrating, but before you start tailgating, remember this simple truth about following a learner driver in the UK:

🛑 Stop Tailgating L-Platers!
When you follow a learner driver too closely, you are creating a dangerous and stressful situation for everyone involved.

⚠️ Increased Anxiety: Learner drivers are already nervous and concentrating intensely. Seeing a car right on their bumper massively increases their stress, making them more likely to make mistakes (like stalling or braking suddenly).

📉 Reduced Thinking Time: Learners need extra time to process information, decide, and execute maneuvers. Tailgating takes away the precious few seconds they need, which can lead to poor decisions.

🛡️ Safety Gap is Crucial: Learner drivers are prone to sudden, unexpected braking. If you are tailgating, you won’t have the space to stop safely. Under the Highway Code (Rule 126), you must always leave enough distance to stop safely, especially when conditions are unpredictable.
What You Should Do:
Double the Gap: Give them more space than you normally would—at least the 2-second rule, and preferably more. This gives them room to breathe and correct errors without causing an accident.
Be Patient: Remember your own learning days! A minute or two of patience will not ruin your day, but an accident caused by impatience could ruin theirs (and yours).
No Hand Gestures or Honking: These only add pressure. Stay calm and wait for a safe opportunity to overtake, if necessary.
Let’s make the UK roads a safer, less stressful environment for those gaining the skills to drive independently! Give them space, give them time.
