Speed Limits Are a Maximum, Not a Target! π¨
π€ What does this actually mean?
When you see a speed limit sign β whether itβs 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, or the National Speed Limit sign β that number is the absolute fastest youβre allowed to drive in ideal conditions. It is NOT a target to aim for no matter whatβs happening around you.
π§οΈ When you should go SLOWER than the limit:
Condition | Why slow down? |
β Wet or icy roads | Stopping distance doubles in the rain β it’s 10 times longer on ice! |
π«οΈ Fog or mist | If you can’t see clearly ahead, you’re going too fast |
π After dark | Visibility is reduced β you can only stop where your headlights reach |
ποΈ Near schools / pedestrians | People might step out unexpectedly β be ready to stop |
πΈ Busy streets | Parked cars, children, cyclists β all mean less margin for error |
π Poor visibility ahead | Only drive as fast as you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear |
π‘ The Golden Rule:
“Drive at a speed that will allow you to stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear.”
If you’re doing 30mph but can only see 20 metres ahead β you’re going too fast. You won’t be able to stop in time if something suddenly appears.
π§ A helpful way to think about it:
β’ β Good driver: Matches speed to conditions β sometimes 25 in a 30, sometimes 50 in a 60
β’ β Aggressive driver: Thinks the limit is the minimum β “It says 30, so I’m doing 30!”
Being a safe driver isn’t about keeping up with the car behind you. It’s about being in control of your vehicle at ALL times. If someone flashes or overtakes because you’re driving appropriately β let them go. Your safety is more important than their impatience. π
β Quick Checklist:
β’ β I adjust my speed for wet/icy roads
β’ β I slow down when visibility is poor
β’ β I’m comfortable driving below the speed limit when needed
β’ β I know the speed limit isn’t always the right speed
Smart driving isn’t about how fast you go β it’s about how well you control what you’re doing. Drive safe, everyone! β
